Position Summary

This is a temporary position with the potential for extension or permanent placement.

The Hollyburn Head of Hockey is an all-encompassing role where this individual is directly responsible for all the ice user groups within the Hockey Department; including Minor Hockey, Men’s Hockey, Women’s Hockey and hockey programs.

The Head of Hockey works to provide fiscally responsible programming that fits with the Members needs and wants. The Head of Hockey works closely with any Hockey Committees to ensure all Minor Hockey and Adult Member programs are flourishing and executed based on program needs and expectations.

The Head of Hockey is expected to liaise with other associations, governing bodies (i.e. Hockey Canada, PCAHA, BC Hockey) to ensure all Hollyburn programs are following and respecting guidelines, changes, rules and regulations set forth by said associations/government bodies.

The Head of Hockey is expected to balance administration, leadership and on-ice responsibilities based on the needs of the department. Participation on ice is encouraged (i.e. coaching programs, shadowing coaches or skills instructors and assisting with any other on-ice needs of the department).

Position Responsibilities

Supervision/Management – 25%
• The Head of Hockey is part of the Leadership Team of Hollyburn Country Club, and oversees the Minor Hockey, Adult Hockey, and hockey programs at Hollyburn
• Responsible for hiring coaches for all programs
• To monitor development of teams through coaching staff, schedule regular meetings with coaches to ensure vision and direction of Hollyburn Minor Hockey is being met
• In-season leadership to hired and volunteer coaches
• Explore and provide development opportunities for coaches and players throughout the year
• Work with Men’s Hockey Committee to provide programming and operational needs

Administrative – 15%
• Responsible to create and monitor minor hockey budget for the season
• To develop, along with the Director of Athletics, a yearly financial plan for all of hockey, and to work towards meeting those goals
• Provides monthly or bi-weekly updates to Athletic Director through departmental meetings
• Assist the Athletic Department in creating the ice schedule in a way that the ice usage is maximized and efficiently used; working with all ice user groups (figure skating, general Membership needs i.e. Stick & Puck, General Skate).
• Lead on meeting financial targets of the hockey program determined by Club and Athletic Director

Customer Service – 10%
• Contribute to Hollyburn’s Magazine, The View, with programming, program highlights, recognizing players, etc. on a seasonal basis
• Champion regular communication to Members through team, department or Club Newsletters or notifications
• Attend to Member and staff concerns and inquires related to recreational programs and services. Responses should be comprehensive, rapid and well informed (the 24-hour policy)

Operations – 35%
• Lead for tryouts and setting teams for Minor Hockey
• To Plan, promote, direct and execute a successful Christmas 3-on-3 event
• To Plan, promote, direct and execute a successful Morgan Reilly fundraiser event
• Ensure ice is generating revenue in Spring through in-house spring teams and programming, coordinate spring team logistics and hire coaches (along with coordinator), manage and build fiscally responsible programming
• Develop along with the Hockey Coordinator the summer hockey programs, hire all instructors/coaches, develop and manage budgets, and promote the programs
• Develop and implement programming based on Membership needs and requests for youth and Adults
• Develop new programming based on guidance/projections from BC Hockey and Hockey Canada
• Hire coaches, execute contracts, train and monitor performance
• Ensure programs are delivered to the highest standard

Development – 15%
• Directly monitor registration and identify opportunities for programs based on numbers and interest
• To grow number of Members involved with hockey
• Conduct a post-season review of program, including a mid-season planning session for possible adjustments
• Expand women’s and girls’ hockey programs

Skills & Qualifications
• Demonstrated effective planning, supervisory, organizational and supervisory skills
• Computer proficiency, word, excel spreadsheets
• Ability to work without supervision and capable of using personal initiative to improve efficiency and meet challenges within the Hockey Department
• Must dress in accordance with agreed upon code appropriate to the Club
• A team player who can lead, organize, engage and train staff effectively
• Experience in administration of recreational activities
• Proven ability to enhance performance, through effective delegation, goal setting, coaching, empowerment, and recognition
• High standards of ethics, honesty, and integrity
• Ability to influence progress through cooperation, conflict resolution, and facilitation
• Innovative approach through critical thinking, collaboration, and intelligent risk taking

Working Conditions
• This position operates 100% on-site
• Regular evenings or weekend work may be required during peak periods or special events
• Own transportation is an asset as public transportation is not frequent to/from the Club
