The Winkler Flyers Junior A Hockey Club of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) are searching for a motivated leader to apply for the position Head Coach / General Manager. This is a full-time position with a competitive wage and bonus package.

The Winkler Flyers are entering the 2024-2025 season coming off of one of their best seasons in franchise history, taking the MJHL’s Turnbull Cup and earning a trip to the Centennial Cup in Oakville, Ontario.  Furthermore, the club helped five players earn NCAA Division 1 commitments during the 2023-2024 season.

The hockey club is primed for success in the 2024-2025 season, with a strong returning class of top end talent supported by an experienced group of coaches and staff. The board is looking to hire a candidate that will uphold the Championship standard set by the board, management and staff these past three years.  The successful candidate will be charged to uphold the highest levels of character, integrity, attitude, reliability, trust, community engagement and relationships.

With renovations to the Centennial Arena expected to commence in the coming weeks, the Winkler Flyers will be playing out of the Icon Arena in Winkler, Manitoba for the 2024-2025 season. The Flyers are a community owned non-profit organization and are well supported by an incredibly strong base of generous local businesses as well as the best fans in junior hockey.

Job Summary

The position will perform all duties associated with the job as Head Coach and General Manager of the Winkler Flyers Junior A Hockey Club, including but not limited to working with the Board President and Executive to prepare a season plan, budget, scheduling, conducting camps, running practices, conducting off-ice training, maintaining team and individual discipline, recruiting players, and promoting the team in the community.

Head Coach Responsibilities:

  • General Duties: Lead and oversee all on-ice and off-ice activities, including camps, practices, games, conditioning, and nutritional programs.
  • Recruitment: Collaborate with staff and scouts to recruit and select a full roster of quality junior caliber players.
  • Representation: Serve as a representative of the Hockey Club’s values and standards in meetings with parents, families, social clubs, and media.
  • Player Management: Enforce player rules, regulations, and team policies, and supervise player conduct both on and off the ice.
  • Game Analysis: Study game film and conduct regular team meetings to break down game film.
  • Community Engagement: Perform community outreach and public relations appearances and nurture strong healthy community relationships.

General Manager Responsibilities:

  • Roster Management: Register and manage the roster and 50-man list through the Hockey Canada Registration system.
  • Compliance: Ensure compliance with all MJHL rules and regulations.
  • Financial Management: Establish the financial budget with the guidance of the Board and manage performance objectives.
  • Marketing Oversight: Provide oversight to the Director of Marketing, including establishing performance objectives and coaching.
  • Sponsorship: Attend sales calls/meetings with the Director of Marketing to key sponsors/partners to drive increased revenue.
  • Event Participation: Actively participate in the execution of all Winkler Flyers camps and events.
  • Scouting: Lead the Scouting Team with the Director of Player Personnel to assist in the recruitment process.
  • Board Interaction: Report directly to the President of the Board of Directors and attend monthly Board meetings as required.
  • Additional Duties: Perform other duties as directed by the Board.

Qualifications:

  • High Performance 1 (HP1): Holds HP1 certification or is in progress of obtaining HP1 certification.
